A New Spin on Custom Merch

Darryl Cohen AKA DJ D-Skillz was just 14 years old when he started DJing more than 30 years ago. Since then, he’s played his mix of hip-hop, R&B, funk, soul, go-go, pop, house, and reggae music over the airwaves and in clubs around the world.

When he was preparing to drop his first full-length release, the electronic music album, Eternal Weekend, he thought that t-shirts would be a great way to promote it. He started his design at customink.com and saved it for later. Soon after, he says, “I got an e-mail from Custom Ink inviting me to stop by a store to order a design I had created on the website. This was a pleasant surprise as I have been dealing with Custom Ink for a number of years and I wasn’t aware they had expanded to storefront locations.”

It seemed like a great opportunity to figure out which shirt would work best for his design, so he made an appointment at our Alexandria, VA location. “I really wanted to see the t-shirt options in person in order to get a feel for the fabric weights before completing my order.”

At the store, he met with one of our sales reps. He says, “Brianna was very helpful in getting my design optimized for printing and making sure I got a good price. She was also very polite and friendly, and really a pleasure to work with. I was really glad I came in!”

He ordered the shirts in the store, and they came just in time to help promote the launch. He’s been selling the shirts along with the deluxe version of the album. He says the launch has been a success, and that the “t-shirts have proven to be an effective marketing tool.” He thinks custom shirts would be “great for getting people engaged around a product or service” and we would have to say that we agree.

You can check out Eternal Weekend and the shirts on Darryl’s Bandcamp page. Eternal Weekend is also available on iTunes and other major digital music retailers.
