I do not believe in the saying, “Once a marine, always a marine. My uncle served in three wars, received four purple hearts and various other medals, and I never heard him say this.
The people I have heard use that saying use it because they have nothing going for them in life. They are either homeless, don’t keep a job or both. Just my opinion but I don’t see how anyone would allow themselves to stay brainwashed like that.
It is common for any Marine who is a true Marine to use that slogan. (Onced a Marine, always….) Most of us who have served, when asked about being a Marine, acknowledge that even though we may have been discharged or have retired, still consider ourselves Marines. Whether active duty or not, we are members of a brotherhood which cherishes our Corps and its history of which we all participated in creating. Checkout Tripoli, Chapultapec, Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima, Inchon, Chosin, Fallujah, Helmand Province. These are only a few of the places where Marines fought and bled for our Corps and country for 238 years. You can foolishly say that you don’t believe it but history tells that it’s true. And no one can ever take that away from US.
Forever cold… I have a message for you. Only a candy ass that never was there would make a statement like you made about the corps that afforded you the freedoms that you enjoy. Obviously “Forever Cold” your Uncle who was a Marine had Integrity, Honor, and a set of Balls! Something you have never found or earned if your questioning the Marine Corps fabric and titles. “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.” is alive and strong and has been forever. Maybe you never heard him say it because he didn’t respect you enough? Maybe he just knew it was something you could never understand because you have never earned anything in your life or put honor in front anything? You don’t even respect your Uncle enough to capitalize the word Marine which he is still today, 6 feet under ground. To all Marines living and past, “Semper Fidelis!” Maybe he said that around you? I doubt it!!!
Forever Cold. Brainwashed, I readily accept the label. From the day I went through the gates of Parris Island I have been brainwashed with Marine pride and I hope it never dies. The brotherhood of Marines is amazing and they have more heart than any fraternity that has ever existed. Let someone find out you are a former Devil Dog and they look at you different. I have heard “you were in the Marines?” a thousand times and it never gets old. Never do you hear someone perk up when they find out you were in the Air Force, Navy or Army.
But it’s ok for what you say because many Marines gave some and some gave all so you can have an
opinion and speak English when you do.
as the former wife of a “former marine” who then joined the army, I had the priviledge of working on Krabenloch Kaserne and at 7th Corp in Germany. Soldiers in general are a breed apart but Marines, they are special. They go through hell to earn the title and the right to be called Marines and I will always have a special place in my heart for them and all the men and women that serve our country both here and abroad. I served in Vietnam and was wounded….I am not a marine but I was in the Navy. My ship the USS DAVIS DD937 We escorted the aircraft AMERICA to Vietnam and was in their task group. 6 of the marines came aboard to train us how to fire the Red Eye Missile launcher…..never met such a great group of guys…..Forever cold these guys were ready to give their lives for not only their own marines but for all of us including you if you had been around at that time…..Dedicated to what they were doing….you have a right to say what you say and to think the way that you do but no one ever learns how awesome these guys are until they fight along side of you…To you who served as marines or are serving now my hat is off for your guts, courage, and love of country……………….
“Once a Marine, always a Marine” is not something that is said so much as it is something that is lived. The quintessential Marine prefers NOT to talk but to ACT. “Silence” and “Listen” both have the same letters. One can’t LEARN when their mouth is open. Maybe if “forever cold” could have felt and experienced the core values his uncle lived, perhaps he or she would understand it’s NOT what you say that counts, it’s what you DO … “Mission First.” Not even a Ph.D. degree guarantees you’ve learned anything, only that you’ve “gone through the program.” A Marine has gone through the program.
A Marine is forever. Forever Cold doesn’t have it. I’m a Vietnam Marine and damn proud to have earned the title!

That said, it is true, you might actually change services, then you might not be a Marine anymore.
My cousin was a Marine, he died in Vietnam you can read his silver star citation, his name is Patrick Riordan. We have traced my family history back to the beginning of the Corps. I come from a long line of fighting warriors and to have some puke say some stupid a#$ stuff like that, man you are not smart! My biggest regret was not serving the beloved Corps. If the Marines would take me today I would gladly sign up to earn the right to wear the uniform and take my place among my ancestors as a United States Marine! My mother pushed college education then to serve, but I would give up all I have now to go back and serve. They live by a higher standard, a higher calling if you will. No matter how crappy the detail, how dire the situation is in combat or civilian life a Marine will always be first to step up or hold the line. Thank you to All who ever wore the uniform and may GOD Bless the United States and may GOD Bless The United States Marine Corps!

My son served three tours (Fallujah x2, Helmand Province x1) and despite him only being 25 yo he firmly believes ONCE A MARINE, ALWAYS A MARINE. He lives up to the standards the Marine Corps instilled in him, so ………………….. he will NEVER forget!
I I had many titles, but the one I am most proud of is US Marine. 0331 m-60 machinegunner Grunt Marine, 30 years ago.
I am a Marine Mom to the Corps. I love to tell people, “I grew up a Squid Brat, married a retired Wing Nut, BUT I RAISED A MARINE!!!!!! My email signature says, “Don’t Mess with Me….I Raised a Marine.” and my favorite saying to some folks……”There is only ONE person tougher than a Marine, and that’s his/her momma.” LOL. So proud of My Son, My Marine! The pride I feel for the Marine Corps is something very special, in deed. They are definately one of a kind.
I thank each and every Armed Forces member, past, present, & future, every day for all they do and all they give/gave. I could not serve in the Armed Forces myself, but that didn’t stop me. I did the next best thing…..I have been a nurse with the VA for 31 yrs………………..and I can honestly say I have loved my job, helping veterans, and making a difference in their lives every day of that 31 yrs……I’m not ready to retire yet. Gotta lot of younguns to help…….

Lets just get a few things straight FC (commented on bottom of page). First of all the only reason you can say something so thoughtless and vile publicly without getting shot IS BECAUSE OF OUR MILITARY! It is our honorable Marines who fight so that you can say stupid stuff on the internet. Ask one. They want you to have and enjoy the freedom of speech that you apparently abuse on a regular basis. Where do you even get the audacity to make such a statement?! Quite honestly no one cares about your stupid opinions!! You get the freedom to say them and that’s about it. Secondly, your statement about Marines that adopt that saying “..have nothing going for them in life.” actually tell us a lot about you. It tells us that you are a “one man show” a “hotshot” that doesn’t need anybody in life. You are very self focused and judgmental. You don’t know what it is to be part of a team. Heck, you probably can’t define the word. And your statement about being “brainwashed”! Shoot I’m so mad right now………! What you see through your warped eyes as “brainwashed” actually happens to be dedication and loyalty, both of which, you have made clear to us, don’t matter to you. The Marines are completely dedicated to each other and their country. The sickening part is that they are dedicated to you and you don’t give a darn. Rather that sitting at your computer making senseless, stupid, “opinions” why don’t you go out and join the Marines. And when you have finished your thirteen weeks then I’d like to hear what you have to say about dedication and their performance. FC – I guess while I sit at my desk at work or at home in my living room, I will be thankful for a few things…I am gainfully employed, I’m not homeless, I served in the Marine Corps and that you didn’t. I am happily and willingly brainwashed.

Hmmmmmm its not easy to say never easy to be a marine its all about loyalty
To me, becoming a Marine means achiving the highest level of what you can be, while simultaneously giving everything of yourself back to the country. When I was a little kid, 4 and 5 years old, I knew that I was going to join the military, I loved everything about it. My reasons then, while they have changed and matured somewhat, are still fundamentally the same. They aren’t about bonuses or benefits, or parties and girls. While that kind of thing is definantly a great add-on, the real reason for me is to do everything that I can to help and support our great nation and to be a member of the greatest society in the world. The Marine Corps gives you a chance to belong to somthing bigger and greater than you could ever be on your own.
When I was looking at what branches to join, I always ended up speaking with or seeing a Marine Recruiter. I don’t know how or why, it just happed. It didn’t take long for me to realize that they are offering exactly what I wanted from the Military, and that they were the only branch I would be happy with. This is not degrading the other services, but the Marine Corps is without a doubt the best, at everything. The training is harder, the DIs are meaner, the runs are longer, the uniforms look better, and Marines mentally stronger than anyone else in the world. They are the best, and if you have a chance to be one of the best, why on earth would you settle for anything less?
