Cotton t-shirts are great for a lot of things. But for a summer 5K, a company field day, or a landscaping crew working through July? No.

We’ve helped thousands of teams get the right gear for exactly these situations, and the questions we hear most often follow the same pattern: What’s the difference between dri fit shirts and moisture-wicking shirts? Does printing on polyester actually hold up? Which shirt should I order for a mixed group where some people are serious runners and some are just there for the free lunch?

This guide answers all of it. We cover how performance fabrics work, how to match fabric to use case, which printing methods hold up best on polyester, and how to order custom athletic shirts without second-guessing every decision.

New to custom shirts entirely? Our complete custom t-shirts guide covers design, printing methods, fabric basics, and the ordering process—useful context before diving into performance fabrics.

Key Takeaways

  • Performance fabrics outperform cotton in active settings. Moisture-wicking polyester pulls sweat away from the body and dries significantly faster than 100% cotton, a real difference for sports teams, outdoor crews, and anyone on their feet for hours.
  • The right fabric depends on the activity. 100% polyester is best for high-intensity athletics and hot conditions. Tri-blends (polyester/cotton/rayon) hit the sweet spot for team wear where comfort and style both matter, the shirt people reach for on weekends, not just at the event.
  • Custom printing works differently on performance fabrics. Not every decoration method pairs well with polyester. Knowing the difference between screen printing, sublimation, and heat transfer, and how we handle dye migration so you don’t have to, gets you a sharper logo that lasts through hundreds of washes.

What Makes a Performance T-Shirt Different from Cotton

The term “dri fit” gets searched tens of thousands of times a month, but it’s actually a Nike trademark for their proprietary moisture-wicking polyester fabric. In the custom apparel world, the technology goes by many names: Cool Dri, PosiCharge, Competitor, UA Moisture Transport. They all describe the same core engineering: synthetic fibers designed to move sweat from skin to surface, where it evaporates quickly instead of soaking in and staying there.

The science is straightforward. Cotton fibers are hydrophilic, meaning they attract and hold water, which is why a cotton tee gets heavy and clingy in the heat. Performance polyester fibers are hydrophobic, meaning they actively repel water. Manufacturers engineer microscopic channels into the yarn that wick moisture outward through capillary action. The result: your team stays drier, cooler, and more comfortable through whatever the day throws at them.

According to the PPAI 2024 Sales Volume Report, apparel accounts for 26.6% of all promotional product sales in the $26.8 billion U.S. industry, the single largest category by a wide margin. And within apparel, performance fabrics are gaining ground fast. Our 2026 Swag Trends Survey found that 25% of buyers say standard unisex cotton t-shirts are becoming “overdone,” and teams are actively looking for functional, premium alternatives. The AllPro Interlock UPF 50 Performance Shirt was our top-selling new product and highest-volume athletic item in 2025, a clear signal that buyers have made the switch.

For a full side-by-side comparison of performance polyester against cotton, cotton-poly blends, and tri-blends—with real manufacturer specs—see our guide to best t-shirt materials.

Beyond moisture management, modern performance shirts bring advantages cotton simply can’t match: UPF sun protection (some rated UPF 50+), anti-microbial treatments that fight odor, tag-free comfort labels, and lightweight fabric weights that pack and travel easily. For a team running a charity race, a crew working outside all day, or a company field day where people will actually be moving, these are the difference between gear that gets used and gear that gets forgotten.

“Gang Green ran in the Blue Ridge Relay to raise funds for the Josh Neuman Foundation, which honors the life of Josh Neuman by providing the basic needs of clean water, food and shelter to underserved communities and to inspire a new generation of people to leave the planet a better place than we found it. The team shirts from Custom Ink featured a QR code on the sleeve where folks could donate and were made with the help of the local store in Charlotte, NC. The team was awake for 42 hours straight and finished the 208 miles of running through the Blue Ridge Mountains in 31 hours, raising just over $21,000!”

Performance Fabric Comparison: Polyester vs. Blends vs. Cotton

Choosing between 100% polyester, polyester-cotton blends, and tri-blends is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when ordering custom athletic apparel. Each fabric has real strengths and trade-offs, and the right one depends entirely on how your team plans to use the shirts.

Price Point$$ to $$$$ to $$$$ to $$$$ to $$

Our 2026 Swag Organizer Survey found that 65% of uniform buyers rate “Smart Fabric” technology (moisture-wicking, wrinkle-free finishes, spandex blends) as “Extremely” or “Very” important for employee uniforms. That number climbs higher among buyers ordering for outdoor crews, athletic programs, and customer-facing field teams. When your people are active, the fabric needs to work as hard as they do.

The ASI 2023 Ad Impressions Study found that 41% of consumers would be more likely to do business with an advertiser that gave them logoed performance wear, and that promotional t-shirts generate over 3,800 impressions during their lifetime at a cost per impression of just 1/5 of a cent. Performance fabrics extend that lifetime because shirts that stay comfortable actually get worn, to the gym, the park, the weekend errand run. A shirt worn regularly delivers more brand visibility than one that sits in a drawer after the event.

When to Choose 100% Polyester

Go with 100% polyester when performance is the top priority. These fabrics are engineered for movement and moisture management above everything else. Sports teams, charity run organizers, outdoor landscaping crews, summer camp staff, and anyone working or competing in heat will benefit most from full polyester construction.

The technology names on our product pages (Sport-Tek’s PosiCharge, Hanes’ Cool Dri, Under Armour’s HeatGear) describe proprietary wicking treatments applied to 100% polyester base fabrics. PosiCharge technology, for example, locks in color and prevents logos from fading, a real advantage for teams reordering the same design year after year.

When to Choose a Poly-Blend or Tri-Blend

For teams that need performance features but also want a shirt that feels like a “regular” tee, poly-cotton blends and tri-blends hit the sweet spot. The cotton and rayon add softness and a relaxed drape, while the polyester provides structure, moisture management, and wrinkle resistance. These are the shirts that get worn beyond the event, to the grocery store, on a Saturday, as the go-to weekend layer.

That matters more than it sounds. Our 2026 Swag Trends Survey found that 67% of swag buyers consider their investment a success only if they see people wearing it voluntarily. Tri-blend performance tees are one of the most reliable ways to clear that bar, because they combine the function of athletic wear with the soft, lived-in feel that people actually choose to put on.

Our Best Custom Performance T-Shirts by Use Case

We carry dozens of performance t-shirts from brands like Sport-Tek, Under Armour, Nike, Hanes, and more. Rather than listing every option, here are some of our top picks organized by the use cases our customers order most. Each recommendation includes the real specs you need to make a confident decision without guessing.

The 91% brand perception stat comes from our 2026 Swag Organizer Survey, where an overwhelming majority agreed that teams and clients feel more valued receiving a recognized retail brand than a generic private label item. For performance shirts specifically, that means Under Armour, Nike, and Sport-Tek carry real weight in how your team perceives the quality of their gear, and whether they reach for it again.

Pro tip: For a corporate 5K or event with a mixed group (serious runners alongside people who are mostly there for the experience) the Sport-Tek Soft Jersey Performance Shirt splits the difference well. Runners get the moisture-wicking technology they need; everyone else gets a shirt that actually feels good to wear.

Printing Methods for Performance Fabrics

Polyester behaves differently than cotton under heat and ink, and not every printer knows how to handle it. We’ve been decorating performance fabrics long enough to have worked through what holds up and what doesn’t. The options compare differently depending on your fabric and design, and there are a few things worth knowing before you choose.

Printing Method Comparison for Performance Fabrics

MethodBest Fabric MatchColor RangeDurabilityBest ForConsiderations
Screen PrintingAll fabrics (cotton, poly, blends)Up to 8 colors per designExcellent, ink bonds to fabric fibersTeam logos, bold graphics, bulk ordersMost cost-effective at higher quantities. Slight texture on fabric surface.
Dye Sublimation100% polyester only (white or light colors)Unlimited, full-color photographic qualityOutstanding, dye becomes part of the fabricAll-over prints, photo-realistic designs, vibrant gradientsOnly works on polyester. No texture added. Design will not crack, peel, or fade.
Heat Transfer (Vinyl)All fabricsSingle or limited colorsGood, vinyl adheres to surfaceNames and numbers, small batch personalizationGreat for individual names and numbers. Can feel slightly stiff.
Digital Heat TransferAll fabricsFull colorVery goodComplex multi-color designs on dark fabricsVersatile across fabric types. Thin, flexible feel.
EmbroideryAll fabrics (heavier weights work best)Wide thread color selectionExceptional, thread is sewn into fabricCorporate logos, premium branding, uniformsProfessional appearance. Adds slight weight. Best for simpler designs.

For most bulk team orders on 100% polyester, screen printing is the strongest combination of cost, durability, and visual impact. For all-over or photographic designs on white or light polyester, dye sublimation is the gold standard: the dye becomes part of the fiber, so there’s zero texture added and colors stay vibrant indefinitely.

One technical factor worth knowing: “dye migration” can occur when polyester is exposed to heat during printing, causing the fabric dye to bleed into the ink. This is a real problem that shows up in orders placed with printers who don’t have experience with synthetics. We manage it with specialty low-bleed inks formulated specifically for performance fabrics, so when you order through us, it’s handled before production starts, not discovered after you open the box.

For employee uniforms or client-facing roles where a polished, professional look matters, embroidery adds texture and perceived quality that print methods can’t replicate. Our 2026 Swag Trends Survey found that 53% of buyers are “Very” or “Extremely” interested in premium decoration methods like embroidery, leather patches, or laser engraving. For performance tees specifically, an embroidered left-chest logo has become the go-to for corporate athletic wear, reading professional in a way that a printed event tee doesn’t.

How to Order Custom Performance T-Shirts

Ordering custom performance shirts works the same as ordering any custom apparel from us. Every order gets reviewed by our team before it goes to production. That review is how we catch dye migration risks, low-resolution logos, and color matching issues before anything is printed, not after. It costs you nothing and protects you from receiving gear that doesn’t match what you approved.

  1. Browse our performance t-shirt collection. Filter by fabric type, brand, color, and price. You can also filter by features like “moisture-wicking” and “UPF protection” to narrow your options quickly. Adjusting the quantity field on any product page shows your per-unit price update in real time at each volume tier.
  2. Open your shirt in the Design Lab. Upload your logo, choose from thousands of clipart options, or customize a template. The Design Lab shows exactly how your design will look on the actual shirt before you commit, what you approve is what gets printed.
  3. Set up sizes, or let your team do it. Enter quantities per size yourself, or set up a Group Order form and let each person select their own size and pay individually. For performance shirts especially, this is worth doing. Athletic fits vary by brand, and people have strong preferences about how they want their gear to fit.
  4. Choose your delivery speed before you start, not after. Standard free shipping arrives in about 2 weeks. Rush and Super Rush options are available for events with hard deadlines. Check the delivery page at the start of the process so your timeline doesn’t catch you off guard.
  5. We review before we print. Our team checks every order for print compatibility, color accuracy, and artwork quality before production starts. If we spot anything, we reach out and fix it with you first. No surprises, no “we’ll do better next time.”

Budget tip: Ordering bulk polyester t-shirts is where per-unit savings get significant. Performance shirts have a slightly higher base cost than basic cotton, which means the quantity discount at 48, 72, or 144+ units delivers more noticeable savings. Check the product page and adjust the quantity slider to see exactly where the price breaks hit for the style you’re considering.

Don’t miss: The Names and Numbers feature is especially useful for athletic teams ordering performance shirts. Add individual player names, numbers, or staff titles to each shirt within the same order: one setup, fully personalized roster gear, no separate orders needed.

Care Instructions for Performance Fabrics

Performance polyester is more durable than cotton in most ways that matter: it resists shrinking, fading, and wrinkling without much effort. But a few specific habits will undermine a performance shirt faster than regular wear ever would. Fabric softener is the biggest one. Here’s what we tell customers who want their shirts to keep performing the way they did out of the box.

  • Skip fabric softener entirely. This is the most important care rule for performance fabrics. Softener coats synthetic fibers and physically clogs the microscopic channels that enable wicking. Over time, it turns your moisture-wicking tee into a shirt that performs like cotton. There’s no way to reverse it.
  • Wash cold, gentle cycle, inside out. Cold water preserves wicking treatments. The gentle cycle reduces abrasion on the fabric surface. Turning the shirt inside out protects the printed design through repeated washing.
  • Tumble dry on low or hang dry. High heat causes pilling, shrinkage in blends, and print damage. Performance polyester dries quickly, so low heat is more than enough, and hang drying preserves the fabric even longer.
  • For persistent odor, soak in cold water and white vinegar before washing. One cup of white vinegar per gallon of water, 30 minutes before the wash cycle. Polyester fibers trap oils and bacteria differently than cotton. This step resets well-used team gear without harsh chemicals that can damage prints.
  • Store folded, not hung. Lightweight polyester can stretch at the shoulders on a hanger over time, especially at the finer fabric weights. Keep stored shirts in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade colors even on PosiCharge-treated fabrics if the exposure is prolonged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between dri fit shirts and moisture wicking shirts?

“Dri-FIT” is Nike’s trademarked name for their proprietary moisture-wicking polyester technology. “Moisture-wicking” is the generic term for any fabric engineered to pull sweat from the skin to the outer surface where it evaporates quickly. All dri fit shirts are moisture-wicking, but not all moisture-wicking shirts are Dri-FIT branded. We carry performance t-shirts from Sport-Teck, Under Armor, Hanes, Nike, and more, each with their own proprietary wicking technology that works the same way regardless of the brand name on the tag.

Q: Can you screen print on 100 percent polyester shirts?

Yes, and we do it well. Screen printing on polyester requires specialty low-bleed inks and precise curing temperatures to prevent dye migration, where the fabric dye bleeds into the print. Printers without experience on synthetics often skip this step. We don’t. Our team manages this with inks formulated specifically for performance fabrics, so your logo comes out clean and holds up through repeated washing. For full-color or photographic designs on white polyester, dye sublimation is the even stronger option: the dye becomes part of the fiber and the design will never crack or peel.

Q: Are performance t-shirts good for employee uniforms?

They’re increasingly the preferred choice, especially for field crews, hospitality staff, and any role involving physical activity or outdoor work. Our 2026 Swag Organizer Survey found that 65% of uniform buyers rate Smart Fabric technology as “Extremely” or “Very” important. The wrinkle resistance alone means employees look polished all day without ironing, a practical advantage that doesn’t show up on a product spec sheet but gets noticed immediately in the field.

Q: How far in advance should I order custom performance t-shirts?

Standard orders arrive within 2 weeks with free shipping. Rush options are available for events with firm deadlines. Check our delivery options page before you start designing, not after, especially if your order has a hard race date or event date. If your timeline is tight, we’ll tell you upfront what’s achievable rather than letting you find out at checkout.

Q: Can I order just one custom athletic shirt?

Many of our performance products have low or no minimums. Check the product details page or filter by “no minimum” when browsing. Per-shirt pricing drops significantly at higher quantities, so for teams and businesses, bulk ordering delivers the strongest per-unit value. For individual needs, low-minimum options are available across most styles.

Q: Are bulk discounts available for polyester shirts wholesale orders?

Yes. All our custom polyester shirts follow the same volume-based pricing as cotton tees: the more you order, the lower the per-unit cost. Adjust the quantity on any product page to see where the price breaks hit for the specific style you’re considering. For very large orders (500+), reach out to our team for a personalized quote.

Q: Can members of my team choose their own sizes for custom athletic apparel?

Yes. Our Group Order feature lets each team member select their preferred size and style (crew neck vs. V-neck, fitted vs. relaxed) and pay separately if needed. This is especially worth using for performance shirts, where athletic fits vary by brand and people have strong opinions about how they want their gear to fit.

Q: Can I get help designing my custom dri fit shirts?

Yes, at no extra charge. Our Inkers can help you build a design from a rough concept, clean up existing logo files, or refine artwork until it’s print-ready. You can also start from one of thousands of templates in the Design Lab and customize from there. Reach out by phone, chat, or email anytime. We’re used to working from napkin sketches and making them look sharp on a performance shirt.

Q: Do performance shirts shrink?

100% polyester performance shirts are highly resistant to shrinkage: the synthetic fibers maintain their shape through repeated washing and drying. Poly-cotton blends and tri-blends may experience minimal shrinkage (typically 1–3%) from the cotton component, especially if dried on high heat. Washing cold and tumble drying on low keeps any blend performing and fitting the way it did on day one.

Q: What’s the difference between athletic fit and regular fit performance t-shirts?

Athletic fit shirts are cut closer to the body with tapered sides, shorter sleeves, and a slightly shorter hem, designed to minimize excess fabric during movement. Regular fit performance shirts offer a more relaxed silhouette with straight sides and standard sleeve length. For team orders with diverse body types, regular fit is the safer choice, or use the Group Order feature to let each person pick their preferred fit. Either way, our Inkers can help you choose the style that works best for your group before you commit to an order.
