Font of the Week – Onyx
Onyx was created as a throwback to the nineteenth century craze over fat face fonts. Fat face fonts were the marketing world’s response to the explosion of trade and commerce in Europe. Print advertising saw a huge uptick, and with that surge came bold yet condensed styles perfect for headlines. Onyx, created by Gerry Powell in 1955, is a reboot of those fat face favorites, like Bodoni. With such extreme stroke contrasts, Onyx is perfect for eye catching titles but can pretty tough to read when made smaller.
