Whether it’s a new hire’s first day or a team celebration, you want the swag you hand out to build a real connection.

But as every manager knows, the real test isn’t the moment it’s opened — it’s whether that gear is being used, worn, and loved months later.

According to our 2026 Swag Trends Survey, longevity is now the single-most important feature managers look for in swag. In an era where disposable is out, the most impactful thing you can do is choose gear that’s built to last.

Even if sustainability isn’t your primary goal, investing in high-quality gear signals you value your team and builds genuine pride — turning your brand into something people want to represent.

Here are 6 ways to ensure your swag has a lasting impact in 2026.

1. Trade Novelty Items for Upgraded Swag Essentials

In 2026, team members say they care less about new and novel gadgets. Instead, they want essentials — but with an upgrade. Think: a nicer hoodie or a shirt that doesn’t feel thin or cheap.

Chris Bullough, Customer Success Manager at Custom Ink, warns against simply picking the lowest-priced option. Instead, he recommends you move toward budget-friendly fan favorites that feel substantial.

  • The Rule: Is it as nice as what they’re already using or wearing? If not, it won’t get used.
  • Try This: Premium, comfortable apparel always wins. Look for “buttery tri-blends, ringspun cotton, and lived-in garment dyes that feel good on the skin,” suggests Arlie Chupeco, Senior Manager, Category Management.

2. Give Your Swag Streetwear Cred

It’s easy to confuse essentials with basics, but here’s the difference. While they both have a utility factor, essentials are the can’t-live-without staples that you reach for again and again–because you love how they look. For 2026, that means leaning into streetwear and athletic styles.

  • The Rule: Choose updated styles that are on-trend, not outdated.
  • Try This: Move away from the “standard unisex t-shirt” — it’s officially overdone. Look for heavyweight materials with boxy, relaxed fits and drop shoulders.

3. Does Your Swag Pass the Grocery Test?

When designing custom apparel, ask yourself if it’s an around-the-house-only shirt, or something you’d happily wear running errands, advises Ben Carter, Head of Creative, who calls it “the grocery store test.” Ideally, it’s an item that feels cool enough to wear out.

  • The Rule: Design for the person, not just your brand.
  • Try This: Keep branding subtle and discreet so your gear feels classic rather than looking like a “beach boardwalk souvenir.” Our Custom Ink design experts can help you refine your idea to get it just right.

4. Choose Brands They Already Love

If you want to guarantee your team feels valued, the tag matters as much as the logo. Our survey found that 91% of respondents feel more appreciated when they receive custom gear from a recognized retail brand like Nike, YETI, or The North Face.

  • The Rule: The brand on the tag is a shortcut to trust.
  • Try This: Pick the brands your team is already buying for themselves.

5. Swag That Prioritizes Downtime Over Desk Time

Your swag’s lasting impact often happens when the laptop is closed. Our 2026 data shows a decisive move away from office supplies toward ‘Wellness and Lifestyle‘ gear that supports an employee’s recharge time.

  • The Rule: Make them feel supported with swag that helps prioritize downtime.
  • Try This: Plush robes, fleece blankets, and premium hydration make swag feel like a cozy care package.

6. Add Texture and Detail for an Instant Upgrade

Sustainability and longevity are often found in the details. Screen printing is classic, but texture is having a major moment, and not just in fuzzy fleece pullovers and quilted bags. Over 53% of buyers are “Very” or “Extremely” interested in premium, 3D decoration methods.

  • The Rule: Tactile details signal high-end curation and quality.
  • Try This: Choose embroidery, leather patches, or laser engraving. It’s a simple way to make a standard item feel high-end.

Meaning Over Volume

Managing a budget is a big job. Nearly 28% of our survey takers said they manage a swag budget of $2.5K to $10K per year with a primary goal of fostering “team unity and belonging.” So, it’s natural to feel frustrated if an order misses the mark. But by focusing on product longevity, you ensure your swag isn’t just a one-off gift—it’s a lasting part of your team’s story.
